Step Out Walk for Diabetes

We had a great turn-out at the annual Step Out Walk for Diabetes in Baltimore on Saturday, October 5. Our team managed to raise over $1014 and we had nearly 40 students walking from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. All of the proceeds went to the ADA to support diabetes research. Go Maryland!

Walking off Diabetes - New, Realistic and FUN exercise goals for Type 2 Diabetes Patients

A common misconception concerning exercise is that physical activity must be vigorous to provide health benefits.  But don't go signing up for any marathons just yet - new guidelines are requiring more realistic goals for Type 2 diabetes patients.   The HHS guidelines state that 150 minutes of brisk walking a week - about 20 minutes a day - substantially reduces the risk of numerous chronic diseases, including diabetes, depression, and breast cancer.

Walking is one of the most popular and widely recommended forms of physical activity for people with diabetes. It’s easy, relaxing and can be done practically anywhere, with anyone! Dr. Regensteiner, professor of medicine and director of the center for women’s health at the University of Colorado at Denver, stresses the important of making exercise goals fun and realistic.  Focusing on this behavioral aspect of exercise will result in more patients following their regimens.

Step Out for Diabetes!

Every year, the ADA hosts an event called StepOut which is a walk to raise money for the fight against diabetes. The money goes towards research to find a cure, raising awareness, and providing services to those affected by diabetes.  Here at the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy, we've formed a team so that we, too, can be part of this very important cause. We are all extremely excited to be able to make a difference through this great event. Our goal this year is to raise $3,000 so please help support us by joining our team or making a donation. Every donation and every step will bring us closer to stopping diabetes and improving the lives of everyone affected by this deadly disease.
